The Otomi of San Pablito, Puebla beat the bark of the jonote tree into paper the way they have for over a thousand years. Pablo Pérez and Marina Martínez, Nahua artisans from Xalitla, Guerrero, drew the design on top in india ink by hand.

The ink work is the rare monochromatic variant of the Nahua painted tradition. Most amate you see is colorful. This one is not. Every line is traced with a fine brush, no printing, no stencils, no two pieces alike.
Casa Lanna Ha framed it in an open-face wood shadow box so the paper can breathe. No glass pressed against the surface. The bark keeps its texture and the piece ages the way it is meant to.

Unlike machine-made paper, handmade amate preserves the natural character of the tree bark. Variations in tone, visible fibers, and darker areas are expected and celebrated as evidence of its handmade origin—not imperfections. These unique characteristics ensure that no two sheets are ever exactly alike. The darker areas, color variations, and natural marks are not stains or defects. They are genuine characteristics of the bark fibers and are an inherent part of the papermaking process.
